Language and Composition 2013-2014

This school year has been the most difficult, for my academic area, due to the fact that I was enrolled in my very first Advance Placement class. Earlier this year when I first enrolled in Language and Composition I immediately knew that I had my work cut for me, literately. I was excited because I knew I was actually going to be learning some knew worth wild ways of understanding language more fluently, and I mean this by annotating several pieces of literature in a way that we would have not been able to, had we not taken this class. I do not remember the exact date when Mrs. Day told the class that we were going to have to write 3 essays and complete a 55 multiple choice question test. When we where told this, an unjustifiable expression developed on our faces. Time passed and we were taught the methods of each essay, and how to basically score a close to perfect score on the multiple choice section. I will admit that there were several times when I felt like writing the essays were only going to cripple me, more over helping me, and this is because  my biggest thing was learning how to follow the structure of the essays. When I first walked in Mrs. Day's class, I was more of a free style writer. I found it extremely difficult to follow the structure, but time passed and  more essays were written. I enjoyed my 2013-2014 Language and Composition class, and I feel that it has help increase my vocabulary for the most part and it has also helped me understand the works of literature. I am extremely grateful for this class.

This is a white man's world.

1.) Research the history of African-Americans from the period of reconstruction following the civil war through world war ii, paying special attention to segregation ("jim Crow") laws and to the legal gains made by african-american during the forties. would a young BLACK intellectual in the 1950 feel only DISGUST for his world, or would he see cause for hope in the future?

Reconstruction refers to the period following the Civil War of rebuilding the United States. The young black intellectuals in the 1950's, I would say, was disgusted and depressed during the reconstruction of the United States. Young black intelligent citizens felt betrayed and disgusted, knowing that the reconstruction of the United States payed special attention to the Jim Crow law. Of course, the Jim Crow law stated the, (separate but equal) theory. Everyone knows that if something is separate, but equal, then it is obviously not equal, otherwise, why would it have to be separate, if they supposedly share the same qualities. With this being said, I believe that the young intellectuals of the 1950's did feel some disgust for his/her world. Not having the same opportunity as the whites, was a let down for the black young citizens. They're thinking to themselves, "I am just as much as a citizen as the whites." He applies for a job of the same position as the next. He have all the same qualifications as the other, if not better. He leaves the interview, he is told that he will receive an answer before he leaves. The next interviewee goes and get interviewed. He happens to be white. Within two minutes, the interviewer comes out of his office and gives it to the white citizen. Both are citizens of the United States of America, he just happens to be lighter, or should I say whiter. The black interviewee is now crushed, he figures that this is going to happen every single time he tries to apply for a job. Now he thinks to himself, "this is a white mans world." He is now disgusted with the world.

BLACK FRIDAY!!?!!?!!?!??

BLACK FRIDAY

The Friday after Thanksgiving Day is known as Black Friday. Black Friday was first established in the 20th century.  Black Friday is not a federal holiday. The day's name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving.

Black Friday Cons:
Black Friday shopping is known for attracting aggressive crowds, with annual reports of assaults, shootings, and throngs of people trampling on other shoppers in an attempt to get the best deal on a product before supplies run out. Another con is overspending, during Black Friday, many Americans tend to buy unnecessary things, just because its cheaper, while they continue to do this, they are also overspending; the exact thing they would have probably done if the items were not on sale.

Black Friday Pros:

Black Friday also have a few advantages; you are getting an item for a less expensive price, you get to surprise your love ones with the precious gifts they always wanted, and you always get to meet new interesting people.

Current Event

Same-Sex Marriages?

There are 15 states who are currently supporting the rights of same-sex marriages. Those states are California, Connecticut, Iowa, Delaware, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, New Hampshire, Maine, Maryland, Washington, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Hawaii.

Hawaii has been the last of the states to legalize same-sex marriages. Obama was in Hawaii, supporting his home town and citizens. Many of the citizens admire Barack Obama for supporting same-sex marriages, and many do not. I would like to say that I too support this act, because everyone is different, and who are we to judge.

Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia

long-term mental disorder of a type involving a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation.

By Michael O'Brien, Pete Williams, Richard Esposito and Tracy Connor, NBC News
A woman who tried to force her car through a White House security fence Thursday afternoon was shot and killed by police after a 12-block chase past the Capitol, which was locked down for a half-hour, authorities said.

Does schizophrenics have an excuse for their immoral actions. I believe that the schizophrenics are able to function without becoming frustrated because of the daily routines around them. Now for the women who crashed into the white house gates, I do believe that she was a schizophrenic. The fact that she had her daughter with her shows that she must have snap in a blink of an eye. I want to believe that she did not intend to put her daughter in danger, but it looks that way. Her relations stated that she seemed normal to them, while with her child, as she did her daily routines. I do believe that no one would really know what happened on the day she was chased and killed.

Dear Incoming Niece

9/11 Attack Letter

Dear Layla,

On September 11, 2001, a tragedy happened in New York City. That was the day thousands of people died.  Terrorist had jacked two planes and crashed into the twin towers. The day it happened, I was sitting in my living room eating a bowl of ice-cream. When I saw the news, my jaw dropped to the floor. I started to tear up. I ran to the phone to call my aunt. I could hear her voice cracking over the phone. She made the statement, "we're living in hell, trapped."

There were a lot of firefighters on duty that day. The twin towers were widely to be considered symbols of America's power and influence. One tower was taller than the other. The shortest tower had collapsed. The first thing I thought about was the people who were in that building. The news later stated that nearly 3,000 people had died in the attack, including all 227 civilians and 19 hijackers. There was black smoke everywhere. I was on the phone with my aunt the entire time. There were 343 firefighter paramedics, 23 New York City police officers and 37 Port Authority police officers. They were struggling to complete evacuation of the buildings.  The office workers who were trapped on the higher floors were killed during this tragedy. I just could have imagined how their families felt as they mourned over their loved ones deaths.

That day, I cried myself to sleep. It's strange how the things that do not affect you physically, still can affect you mentally. Sometimes I think, I wish there was something I could have done to prevent that day from happening, but no one has those kind of powers. I am grateful that you did not have to go through that, because it hurts bad to know that a lot of people died because of ignorance. The day 9/11 happened, a lot of hearts were broken, and I was one of them.

Love,
Jessyca

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

What Ralph Emerson was saying in this quote is that you should not want to be the one following, but the one leading.
Education is the most precious thing you can obtain.  It is very delicate and you should want to hold on to it.

It is very nearly impossible... to become an educated person in a country so distrustful of the independent mind.
James A. Baldwin

I agree with this quote, only because I can actually can testify to this quote.  I understand that I have a long ways to go on building my knowledge of wisdom and on education.  Everyone should have an independent mind of their own or at least want to have one.  In James Baldwin's, "A Talk to Teachers," he explains how he is not an educator, but his morals shows that he knows what he is talking about.
